1. The Cave of Antiparos for a natural miracle
Prepare to witness a natural miracle!
What does this mean?
Antiparos Cave is probably the most famous site of the island! It is, basically, a cave full of stalactites and stalagmites of different shapes.
This magical cave is located at the south eastern side of the island and has a rich historical past! The first findings about the cave show that it was used as a refuge, as well as a worship place.
The interior of the cave though, was explored by the French ambassador of Constantinople, Marquis de Nouadel in 1673. During his visit to Antiparos, he decided to perform a Christmas mass on the top of a stalagmite, which looked like an altar! That was the first time that this beautiful cave was explored.
Want to hear something interesting about the Cave of Antiparos?
At its entrance, there is the oldest stalagmite of the cave (and probably the oldest one in Europe), estimated to be around 45 million years old!
The size of the cave is impressive, too, as it is about 5,600 square meters and around 100 meters deep! Amazing, right?
